Electric Power Steering ( EPS )

Sejak tahun 2000 an beberapa produsen kendaraan telah mengembangkan sistem Electric Power Steering ( EPS ). ada dua type EPS, yaitu electro hydraulic type, sistem EPS yang menggunakan motor electrik untuk menggerakkan vane pump , dan type full Electric Power Steering yang menggunakan motor elektrik untuk menggerakkan steering system.
keuntungan utama dari penggunaan EPS ini adalah desain yang kompak dan ringan, dengan ditiadakannya vane pump hidraulis dan hose power steering, selain itu biaya perawatan yang ringan dan efisiensi bahan bakar kendaraan, hal ini dikarenakan tidak adanya vane pump, sehingga efisiensi tenaga mesin meningkat. Pada beberapa type tertentu, tingkat momen steering assist dapat diubah sesuai dengan kondisi pengendaraan melalui scan tool pabrikan atau scan tool type tertentu.

Konstruksi EPS cukup sederhana dimana motor EPS ditempatkan pada steering column atau rack steer, steering column, rack steer, ECU EPS, dan torque sensor dan steering sensor yang diempatkan pada steering column.
Cara kerja EPS juga cukup sederhana : Saat pengemudi menggerakkan roda kemudi, steering sensor mendeteksi sudut perputaran steering wheel dan torque sensor mendeteksi momen putar pada steering shaft, kedua sensor ini memberikan input kepada ECU EPS untuk memberikan arus kepada Motor EPS sesuai dengan kecepatan kendaraan, sehingga didapatkan momen assist yang sesuai dengan kondisi pengendaraan. Pada beberapa type tertentu ECU EPS juga memperoleh input sinyal dari sistem Traction Control dan Vehicle Stability Control, sehingga akurasi steering assist lebih baik. position sensor pada motor memberikan sinyal feed back pada ECU EPS, sehingga ECU dapat memonitor posisi pergerakan motor EPS.
